[9/10/22 sat] hello + 1st balcony garden entry est. late march 22

Hello everyone! Wow my world has been busy busy. Hope you are all meandering along smoothly in life. Just went door-to-door canvassing for Environmental Voter Project today and things are coming along fairly well at work.

Now, for the long anticipated… balcony garden entries! Yes, my fellow interneters… I have finally uploaded my photos to the cloud and now they will be shared with you. Hoo wee! Fancy tech here on wordpress let’s me do captions so captions will consist of the location of what’s being photo’d and the general what it is being photo’d. (Top means closer to the building while bottom means closer to the railing. So top right is right next to our patio door)

There they are! Not very impressive at all but that’s how all beginnings are right? So yep, main things that were alive in March were the two dormant native plants that I had brought with me. This is them freshly transplanted into big pots to flourish. Besides that, the only other live things were a couple a garlic seedlings that you can see one of in the middle photo.

At the time I didn’t know my cottage gardener friend yet so the soil I used was leftover from what my roommates or I brought. All the pots you’re seeing are secondhand – big purple plants and big white planter you see in middle planter were picked up from the curb (rich people throw out so much stuff! I wonder if any of them consider what landfill really is… *sigh* that’s a talk for another time) and others were left over from my previous school garden work. I used coconut coir for the seedlings (cost effective and pretty sustainable from what I’ve read. it does tend to crust though…)

For some context, I’m in a typical suburb corporate run apartment complex. This area is nice in that the people here aren’t upsettingly uppity. Many of the prior complexes I visited regulate what you can do on your balcony! My complex doesn’t care! 🙂 These are big balconies too! I’m on the second floor so everything was brought up a flight of stairs. Balcony is nice and solid cement. Gotta love that carbon intensive material huhn! /s At least it is solid though – in the present day, it is packed with plants and heavy dirt and no issues so far (hope I don’t jinx it now…) There is one outdoor outlet but no water spigot. Balcony slopes slightly downward for water drainage. Lighting is decent. Facing southwest so we get medium light – we’ve got a tree on the south side that provides some nice shade both good and bad (good for me hanging out on the balcony sans skin cancer but bad in terms of reduced production I suppose). That’s everything I can think of for the technical bits.

And yep, that’s all for today folks but do check in soon! This is like the ultrasound of my balcony garden – it’s grown now and I like things organized so baby photos before I get to the all grown ones:)

Let’s chat soon,

sofu

ooooo (covid-safe hugs)
